Hong Kong has officially launched its first full-stack embodied AI laboratory — the Hong Kong Embodied AI Lab. Behind the formal press release sits a far more interesting story: the lab has launched with 24 industry partners on day one, and that list reads as a who’s who of mainland China’s robotics frontier — from the world’s largest humanoid maker AGIBOT to the creators of Unitree and Shanghai’s National Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center. This isn’t just a university news item. It’s a signal of how exactly Hong Kong is plugging into the broader China-wide robotics ecosystem.
What launched
On May 18, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) announced the opening of the Hong Kong Embodied AI Lab — the city’s first “full-stack” laboratory in embodied AI and robotics. It is being established by the Hong Kong Centre for Logistics Robotics (HKCLR), a CUHK research center operating under InnoHK, the Hong Kong government’s program for building international research clusters.
“Full-stack” in the name isn’t marketing language. The lab is set up to cover every layer of development at once: from joint modules and robotic hardware, through control, manipulation, and perception algorithms, all the way to finished products — humanoids, dexterous hands, quadrupeds, and novel robot morphologies. That breadth is unusual for a university project; most centers specialize in just one slice of the stack.
The opening ceremony featured Ms Winnie Chan, Assistant Commissioner for Innovation and Technology of the Hong Kong SAR government; Professor Irwin King, CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education); and the leadership of HKCLR and the new lab itself — Professor Liu Yunhui, Professor Li Zhongyu, and Professor Dou Qi. The shared thread across all the speeches: the lab’s purpose isn’t publications — it’s moving research out of academic walls and into industrial and service deployment.
The partners are the story
The most interesting thing about this news isn’t the launch itself. Embodied AI labs are opening all over the world right now. What makes Hong Kong Embodied AI Lab distinctive is its partner map.
The lab launches with 24 industrial partners — and these aren’t decorative on-paper affiliations. They are companies, investment funds, and government centers committed to the work from day one. The key names on the list:
— AGIBOT (formally AGIBOT Innovation Shanghai Technology) — the world’s largest humanoid maker by shipments (we recently covered their new AGILE model).
— Yushu Technology — the official name of Unitree Robotics, known for its quadrupeds and the G1 humanoid; based in Hangzhou.
— Deep Robotics — another major Chinese quadruped developer, also based in Hangzhou.
— National and Local Collaborative Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center — the Shanghai “heterogeneous” humanoid training hub, where 100+ robots from a dozen companies are trained together on a shared dataset.
— Lenovo Capital and Incubator Group — Lenovo’s venture arm, one of the most active corporate investors in China’s robotics sector.
— Zhejiang Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center — the regional humanoid robotics center for Zhejiang province.
Plus roughly two dozen more companies and funds — from Chinese developers (Westwell Holdings, Shanghai Seer Intelligent Technology, Mondo Technology, Cyan Technologies, and others) to venture players (Hong Kong Innovation Angel Investment, Radiant Tech Ventures, Shanghai Houxue Capital).
Put simply: the partner list is, in effect, a snapshot of the leading edge of China’s robotics ecosystem as of mid-2026, plus key Hong Kong venture players.
What was shown at the ceremony
Alongside the speeches, three concrete pieces of work were unveiled at the ceremony — all developed inside HKCLR by CUHK teams:
— Hong Kong’s first AI-powered dual-arm robotic platform. Equipped with multimodal sensors and a mobile manipulation system, it’s designed for “two hands working together” in domestic and service settings — apartments, offices, restaurants.
— An ultralight, force-controlled robotic arm with “millimetre-level” precision. It weighs just 6 kg — very light for a manipulator — while maintaining millimetre-level positioning accuracy. It can be mounted on different platforms, including mobile robots and humanoids.
— An all-terrain quadruped robot. Built with a differential drive system, reinforcement-learning-trained motion control, and visual navigation, it can autonomously traverse complex terrain.
In addition, Professor Dou Qi presented a vision-language model with spatial intelligence — a model that fuses image recognition, language understanding, and spatial reasoning into a single system. The results were published in Science Robotics, one of the most authoritative journals in the field.
What this means
The press release explicitly states that the lab is being established “in alignment with the National 15th Five-Year Plan and global trends in AI and robotics development.” That phrasing is not a ritual nod toward Beijing. It signals that Hong Kong is plugging its embodied-AI research infrastructure directly into mainland China’s state-level strategy.
Read the partner list against that backdrop, and the picture comes into focus. AGIBOT, Unitree, Deep Robotics, the Shanghai National Center — these are companies that already operate within China’s “national” pipeline of humanoid development and deployment (we recently covered Hubei province’s mandatory robot ID system — one example of how mainland China is starting to build unified standards across the whole industry). Hong Kong is now joining that same system, bringing along its own advantages: access to international research networks and freer movement of capital.
What Hong Kong gets: status as a key research node for China’s entire robotics ecosystem. Not a standalone city with its own program, but a node in a much larger network.
What the mainland partners get: an international “outlet,” access to CUHK’s academic talent, and a platform for publishing in international journals like Science Robotics.
In the wider picture, this lines up with a theme we’ve been tracking for several pieces now.
